Some of the coolest software I have found for Windows is the Yahoo! Widget Engine. 
It is similar to the Mac OS Dashboard but for Windows (Yahoo! Widget Engine is campatable with Mac but why would you bother using it). There are a ton of different widgets that do a ton of different things. Check out the website and look around, below is an example of just a few.
